Mexico, 20th Century, 5 Centavos (Nickel), 1905-1914.
This is probably one of my favorite coin series within 20th century Mexico. It is a short-lived 9 year series from 1905-1914 only missing the year 1908, yet it has quite a few interesting varieties.
Before I begin, I must point out that this series was minted during the Mexican Revolution during which time that the Federal Government was having a very difficult time minting enough coinage for the masses. It was due to this situation and circumstance that caused many of the Mexican states and provisional governments to mint their own coins much to the chagrin of the Federal Government.
The mint recognizing this situation authorized the minting of parts of the nickel 5 centavos series to the Birmingham Mint in England. The coins minted there had the same planchet and die specs as the coins minted at the Mexico City mint. With that said, you will find that almost every year during this time period, has a slightly different variety or attribute some of the more common differences have attributed by NGC while others have not yet been attributed.
This might explain some of the varieties since one may be part of the coins out of England while the others might come out of the Mexico City Mint. Since no records exist of the differences, nor the die nuances, it is one of those things that we simply know, but don't totally understand the specifics. To the collector, we know there are differences and most of us will want them for our collection.
These varieties include overdates (ex. 1906/5, 1913/2), large and small mintmarks (ex. 1906 & 1912) and wide & narrow date spacing (ex. 1911, 1913 & 1914). I must add that I have heard from several dealers of the existance of other overdate varieties, however none have been seen by me, nor have any been graded by NGC, therefore I look forward to the hunt of finding some of these elusive varieties.
Since this coin was struck on a planchet made of 100% nickel, it did not wear or last as well as other metals, therefore coins from this series are not normally found in high grade. In fact, most look very worn, pitted and low grade. If you are lucky enough to find one in high grade, pick it up since most years are tough to find.
Besides the 1906/5 overdate, the key coin or date for this series is 1912 and certainly the toughest to find in nice grade while the most common and readily available dates are 1906, 1910, 1911 and 1914.
I might add that there are at least 5 different mint mark designs documented for this series. Style #1 - Regular, Style #2 - Notched, Style #3 - Prominent, Style #4 - Rounded and finally, Style #5 - Bold.
Although this series has only 10 NGC Registry Sets (as of 9/2025), this is one of those 20th century sets that most people don't collect or really care about. The design is simple and the fact that these coins are not readily available or easily found in high grade will turn off many collectors.
With that said, it just leaves the series wide open for collectors to go out and find the nice coins, as well as be on the lookout for some of those elusive varieties yet to be discovered and documented.
I welcome any comments or feedback from my fellow collectors of this series.阅读全文
