Up until the announcement of the 2021 Best Modern Set Award winners that would include our 1965 to Date Clad Roosevelt Dime Uncirculated Set, all of our concentration was on the continuing search for higher graded year dates offered in the coin marketplace to better this set as well as our other denominational sets of strictly U.S. modern coinage. Ever since our 2007 start of raw coin collecting and transition to graded coins, it has been a constant affair of chugging along to little by little acquiring the best available grade of all coins and replace those with a higher grade. By the way, when I say "our" in collecting, I mean the partnership of one principal Sheila Moore, my love and best friend, and myself Edward Lauth. For the most part, Sheila's activity was mostly passive with occasional financial backing and mine was "moore" a passionate.coin undertaking endeavor. Sheila and I eventually married, however, after 8 months of hospitalization recuperating from a major stroke the Lord took her soul in October of 2023, RIP.
NGC's write up for our 2021 Best Modern Set Award was the following:
"The series of copper-nickel-clad Roosevelt Dimes is now well over 50 years old, and this wonderful set is complete from 1965 through 2020 with the sole exception of the 1982 dime variety lacking a mintmark. All the coins are NGC-certified in high grades. Though it would be nice to have more photos, the grades speak for themselves. Among the more memorable entries are 1965 (MS 68), 1981-D (MS 68 FT), 1984-D (MS 67 FT), 1985-D (MS 68 FT), 1987-D (MS 67 FT), 1989-D and 2004-D (both MS 68 FT)."
The listed coins were complimentary, but only a short list with others deserving to be mentioned..And there is plenty of room for improvement to come which will deserve recognition in the future. Winning a first NGC major Award was a wake up call that it was time to add "presentation" and dialogue on our now maturing Registry Sets of record. The graded coins do speak plenty of themselves, however, providing a perspective of documentation and commentation will add story to a shared experience.
Photos did follow as recommended. All of our coins now have photos of their obverse and reverse. The hard part of providing a write up for each coin when clicked has been completed in total as of June, 2024..For this main section a summarization of the coins broken down by the "decades" are provided. In the discussion, credit to the originators or sellers of a coin that were pivotal in their purchase are given mention. Most are private eBay sellers or private graders, but lately there is a dominance from GreatCollections, an auction house in Irvine, CA.
:
1965 to 1969 half Decade -
There were three new #1 rank additions in 2022: the 1965-P MS 68 FT of 12/0 pop ($925 PG) that was purchased from "chunk-it" of the renowned Jefferson 5C Registries; the 1966-P MS 68 FT of pop 8/0 ($700 PG) that was purchased from Donovan Floyd of eBay seller "moderncoinking"; and the 1968-D MS 68 FT of 16/0 pop ($415 PG) that was purchased from Mark Di Lauro (or the "King of Coins" as I call him) of eBay seller "datentype,"
In 2023 a #2 rank 1968-P MS 67 FT of 15/1 pop ($350 PG) was added, however, in 2024 it was replaced by the #1 rank 1968-P MS 68 FT of pop 1/0 (no PG) that was purchased from Jack of eBay seller "madeyourday."
The 1969-P MS 66 remains a bugger to improve upon. A MS 67 in 2022 did show up for sale on eBay at high buy now price that was significantly over the PG value of $250 which I passed on. No movement available on the 1969-D MS 68.
In late 2024 GreatCollections listed a pearl of a pearl 1967-P MS 69 FT of 1/0 pop, probably the toughest date of the clad series, which deserved a go for all out bidding to win and it sold for half of my top bid. What a deal!
The seven current grades of this five year half decade is summarized:
1965–1969 P &/or D CLAD ROOSEVELT 10c: MS69FT(1), MS68FT(4), MS68(1) MS66(1) = 2($) - 5($2,490 PG) R17,244(points).
1970 to 1979 Decade -:
The MS 67 FT grade key for this ten year period of 20 P & D year dates and a real accomplishment if obtained. A MS 68 FT grade is a monster coin if such exist. Otherwise, the MS 66 FT can be a victory as can be a MS 68 or a MS 67 when top pops or close to. The following grades are listed by dates and mint mark, with pop, (PG), Rpoints and originator of the coin named:

1979-P 30/0, ($85), R395
from Bob Johnson of "bjcoins".
I could of left out a few of these coins and highlighted just the main biggies. However, it is a difficult decade set of dimes to collect in higher grade that takes great patience, timing and readiness to buy at a decent price on mostly rare listings not often offered especially when you may get just one or maybe a couple of opportunities over a period of five, ten or fifteen years to acquire certain year dates in gem quality condition.
The twenty current grades of this ten year decade is summarized:
1970–1979 P&D CLAD ROOSEVELT MS 68 FT(1), MS67FT(7) MS66FT(4) MS68(2) MS67(6) 2($) - 18($3,640 PG), R23,698(points).
1980 to 1989 Decade -
The MS 68 FT's are definitely the real deals for this decade genre of clad dimes. Notably:
1981-P ROOS MS 68 FT 30/0 pop, ($430) R2009(#1) &
1981-D ROOS MS 68 FT 66/0 pop, ($175), R2033(#1) are both from the prolific grading of Mark Di Lauro:of eBay's "datentype."
1982-D ROOS MS 68 FT 2/0 pop,($1,450). R3004(#1) from a GreatCollections consignment auction.
1984-P ROOS MS 68 FT 13/0 pop, ($280), R1505(#1) from Mark Gibson of gemguy2u (who got it from Mark Di Lauro).
1985-P ROOS MS 68 FT 4/1 pop, ($365), R1646(#2) &
1985-D ROOS MS 68 FT 24/0 pop, ($125), R2643(#1) are both from the grading of Mark Di Lauro:of eBay's "datentype."
*1986-P ROOS MS 68 FT 1/0 pop, ($), R1843(#1), the pearl of the whole group and the toughest year date this decade I believe, came from now retired Bob Johnson, formally of "bjcoins" of eBay, BUT PAID COIN WAS NEVER DELIVERED & NOW IN DISPUTE OF OWNERSHIP WITH ANOTHER REGISTRY.*
1987-D ROOS MS 68 FT 2/0 pop, ($),R3216(#1) came from a GreatCollections consignment auction.
1988-D ROOS MS 68 FT 13/0 ppop, ($215), R1510(#1) is from the fantastic grading of Mark Di Lauro as well as the final two -
1989-P ROOS MS 68 FT 17/0 pop,($185), R2960(#1) &
1989-D ROOS MS 68 FT 24/1 pop, ($350), R3238(#2).
Hell, just as appealing are the MS 67 FT grades:
1982-P ROOS MS 67 FT 39/1 pop, ($140),
R1609(#2) from the private grading of Mike Rakosky,
1984-D ROOS MS 67 FT 14/1 pop, ($75), R2124(#2) from RHF's Centurion Collection consignment auction by GreatCollections in 2018.
*1986-P ROOS MS 67 FT 7/1 pop, ($115), R1707(#2) from GreatCollections.
1986-D ROOS MS 67 FT 5/1 pop, ($285), R1450(#2) a super tough year date from GreatCollections. And finally,
1988-P ROOS MS 67 FT 33/10 pop, ($140), R2124(#2) from the grading of Mark Di Lauro:of eBay's "datentype," dominant name appearing most often for this decade of coins.
Sorry to say, no movements could be made to better the
1983-D ROOS MS 66 FT 4/4 pop,($160), R949(#3) nor on the four non-FT grades:
1987-P MS 68,
1980 P & D MS 67 and
1983-P MS 67 year dates. Still lacking is a 1982 no P variety coin (although recently I was "close to, but no cigar" as the losing #2 bidder for a MS 67 at GreatCollections).
Summarization is as follows:
1980–1989 P&D CLAD ROOSEVELT MS68FT(10), MS67FT(5), MS66FT(1), MS68(1), MS67(3) 20 of 21 COIN SET 1($) - 19($4,855 PG), R36118(points).
1990 to 1999 Decade -

Notes: I still have not seen a 2005-D ROOS SMS MS 69 FT of 4/0 pop nor a 2006-D ROOS SMS MS 69 FT of 14/0 pop SMS MS 69 FT available over the last 15 years and may have to buy them in a PCGS holder in hope for a successful PCGS crossover event to occur after submitting them to NGC grading. James Lam of the "coinnut" Registry told me he did this successfully in late 2019 on a submitted 2005-D ROOS PCGS SP69FB coin. It was the last increase of one in pop in the NGC Census from 3/0 to 4/0. If this crossover method works it may be the fastest and easiest way for us to complete a desired full 12 coin 2005 to 2010 P & D Roosevelt SMS MS 69 FT top pop Set.
2011 to 2024 Decade (14 years):-

Grades = MS69FTPL(1), MS69FT(12), MS68FTDPL(1), MS68FTPL(2), MS68FT(11), MS67FTPL(1) 18($) - 10($745 PG) R20838(points).
As a color comment to collecting I want to add this coin experience. It is sweet to point out in mentioning a kudo to eBay's "McM" for providing two rare top pops: 2012 P & D MS 68 FT pair which seem to be the toughest to find in higher grade of this latter date of year-dates in this decade genre group. Both of the 2012 dimes were the first to be auctioned that year on eBay and were selling awfully cheap. Only a few followed and it was the only year that bidding high on first listed highest graded coins paid off. Bidding blindly on the unknown and ungiven pop specs like how many were graded at the early time with no pop provided after 30 or more days after grading wasn't a smart thing to do and seldom paid off. So many other times has that early guess been wrong, no matter what coin denomination, over the several years of experience in buying new mintages. With no insider grading knowledge available, it's a crap shoot of very few winnings that will cost you in the long run.
In conclusion as a whole to summarize, the 1965-2024 P & D (No P) CLAD ROOSEVELT 130 of 131 COIN 10c SET Grades = MS69FTPL(1) MS69FT(22) MS68FTDPL(1) MS68FTPL(1) MS68FT(45) MS67FTPL(3) MS67FT(29) MS66FT(7) MS68(5) MS67(11) MS66(1) 22($) - 106($17,715 PG), R136200(points)
As a parting comment it should be noted that a good number of the same above coins in our Set may have started in the stupendous former #1 Paul Kiraly Registry Collection, named "Killing the Competition", that pre-dated the wondrous former #1 Mark Gibson of "gemguy2u" Registry Collection, named "Don't be mad, be clad". Mark bought many coins that Paul sold from his set. I bought some of Paul's and more of Mark's coins when he was selling coins off.his set. I had purchased coins from Mark before his major sell off because more than not Mark had many duplicates of coins during his build up years. There wasn't a high grade dime Mark didn't know about that were listed new every week. This went on for years, I could always tell when Mark was bidding on eBay by the same "phony" ID eBay would use to hide bidders real ID. Tracking the new or spare coins he won was as simple as checking his updated Registry activity and new coin listings for sale on his real eBay ID. There is nothing wrong in what Mark did as even I, with all the same knowledge and experience learned over time on the Roosevelt market is a shame to not be put to good use when items go low and can be sold for more similar to those who buy and sell stocks.
Another point is that Paul, Mark and :I as well many other Roosevelt dime collectors bought coins from Mark DiLauro of "datentype" on eBay for years and years. His imprint of grade production of coims in the Census is quite astonishing, much greater than one would imagine. Those of us collectors that witnessed this over the years have to tip our hat to the "King of Coins."
Sheila Moore and I are very proud of our assembled 1965 to Date Clad Roosevelt Dimes Registry that is ranked #1 NGC Best in Category and a close #2 rank Best in Category by a couple of thousand points. The #1 Ranked Best in Category Set is tremendous composed of all PCGS high grade coins. A final goal to surpass that Set in the next few years will be difficult but not impossible... I will try my best to carry on Sheil's legacy following the same tradition of improvement we started with by adding the best available higher grades going forward. In Sheila's honor her name will remain unchanged on all our Registries as long as that future day of selling does not come a knocking.
"My final comment about this set has to do with the drastic decrease of revisions in recent past made to the NGC Price Guide for 1965 to present clad Roosevelt dimes, a valuation fiasco to the detriment of established NGC Collectors or Registry set holders and a loss of NGC trust causing confusion to the marketplace in general. I have kept comparison notes of NGC vs PCGS values of my graded set of coins for the past decade. Prior to NGC's recent revisions my NGC/PCGS set valuations were relatively close with the NGC total being about 20% lower than PCGS's on average. From 2019 to 2021I have discovered that a PCGS set total of the same grades is now valued around 3X higher than the values that NGC changed to. Now my set is about 25% of a likewise PCGS set total. Straight comparisons between NGC & PCGS coin data are more like comparing apples to oranges in many instances. The variances are not approaching apples to oranges as a whole. Grading practices are similar, but population numbers are skewed higher in instances where PCGS has the brunt business of grading a lot more coins on specific dates. When NGC has a fraction of pop of PCGS cost to acquire a date is not near the same and a lot higher than the supply and demand market fluctuations of PCGS coin data. Additionally, since buyers young and old rely on a set Price Guide value in determining the price to bid at or to buy a coin, a too low PG will lead to significant reductions in prices paid across the board and the mistrust of collectors goes rampant as the inevitable conclusion when coins can't be bought for less than PG. Same with sellers who lose money on coins purchased years before, Or for that matter, those submitting new coins for grading especially on tough dates that demand a higher return because of the low prospect of receiving a top grade do not get the premium involved there will be a major drop in business.1965 to Date NGC graded Roosevelts since the NGC revisions of PG has been extremely curtained even disrupting the established market prices even more. Sellers today suffer from the lower revenues leading.to their unwillingness to sell their already graded stock or holt new grading which dries up new listings of available coins which loses collector interest. The main goal of NGC in making the revisions was their attempt to provide values to the grades given that for the most part were not on provided or missing on most higher grades. At times less than 50% of our Registry coins had a given PG. Another goal was to provide coin values more closer to their actual closing sales prices or cost. PCGS started their effort on this around 2010 and there were serious concerns that the market cap of their coins could lose 50% to 75% of total values. It was a frightening thought by collectors that their investment made to date was to become a major loss. From that point on I sold my PCGS coins and would only purchase NGC graded coins in the future. For simple reasons like taking years to implement their valuation plan and to invest heavily on tracking and documenting the sales data across a large spread of selling platform other than just Heritage or GreatCollections auctions, not only has their market or business not failed precipitously, but their pricing valuations are the envy of the market with a fanfare of fairness.
Both of these goals, if reached by NGC, would be seen as great accomplishments, as positives and rewarding, but the good intensions had a major drawback that would hinder the accuracy of the revision calculations. That problem, as I see it, had to do with the lack of data that was incomplete or non-existent from their limited collection of past historical sales that would be fed into equations of the revised formulas in use or the use of ones to be devised. NGC has only limited access to a small portion of coin sales data coming from Heritage or GreatCollections auctions. No data is collected from eBay, the largest coin marketplace in the US, could be accessed nor could other types of private sales be instantly reported or recorded for no widescale operation existed at NGC then or maybe even now. NGC was heavy weighted in the front of the house like incoming grading with little investment on the backside servicing of the coin holders .This can be witnessed or evident in the online Coin Explorer section that lists limited and outdated past sales, the vast majority of which is from PCGS coins. It's no secret that NGC for years has been using (or pirating) PCGS's wider spread of data collection for their coin valuations, even though the comparison between NGC & PCGS are hard to evaluate in so many instances, let alone the grading and population variants to consider. There is no rationality to explain the extreme of the NGC revised lower values versus those of PCGS. Remember, in the comparison I made above on my set that amounts up to let say a two thirds lower difference. PCGS is not 3X better than NGC. In fact, I take pride in buying NGC graded coins only and believe that if there is a difference between the two best grading companies in the world I give the advantage to NGC. Under undue pressure, NGC's technicians must have tried their best with formulas but were forced to rely more on their really insufficient collection of data on NGC coins. What a poor situation for the pressured actuary to be in trying to perform magic to fulfill that the head bosses were pushing as company goals with no or limited funds.of investment to do it properly. NGC got it all wrong to the point of causing a reputation let down to itself and valuation losses to its labeled and slabbed graded coins and to the owners of them including its members the company has striven to protect over the years..NGC knows this having heard the cries made by many and it did lead to firing of certain personnel directly involved in the price value revisisions eventually. Kudos for NGC making that act, but the revisions have not been changed for the most part staying with the lower values. The bosses trying to figure out a next step to get things right from here have been quiet without any public acknowledgement. No news announcements to membership, not even a whisper heard that one may hear about from time to time through associations, coin dealers, etc..The Clad Roosevelt coin denomination wasn't alone in lower Price Guide value revisions with similar ramification issues suffered of the same sort. If your a Clad Washington quarter collector you know this too be true. No word yet about NGC consideration to beefing up or adding assets to the department of data collection as a possible answer to the open sore problem, . the back end of operations, that is. Instead, we do hear about the front end increases dealing with increasing the number of grading coins. Trust and Loyal to the brand. Investment in the back end is just as important, maybe even more from my view. I've used this space as an advantage to be heard to comment on the issues involved. If you feel that such is not the place nor proper, I apologize for my stubborn ignorance. You see, ever since I wrote this in early 2021, I have not received a single comment from anyone and nothing has done with re-configuring the Price Guide values. Not my problem anymore. My time has passed and coins aren't an issue in heaven. Ed, get out of the coin business."

"And that was how she felt with the "i" dotted and "t" crossed. She wasn"t shy in speaking her mind. She was something else, a character, and I love her forever missing her companionship. Goodbye to my Best Friend and Wife in life. Let us pray and be thankful, Lord."

PS: I do want to add that the last quarter of 2023 I have noticed for the first time in over 2 years a big uptick in demand and supply of Roosevelt listings, mainly at GreatCollections, some on eBay. Maybe a foreboding to a positive future comeback?.
PSII: Not much rebound seen for the first half of 2024. Anemic new offerings or new gradings and bidders not going near the low set Price Guide values. In a sense that is OK with me as I can win more coins in auction by bidding above an incorrect given values comfortably believing the truth will be told in the future upon when a correction will inevitably occur. Call it a "homeostasis" as in chemistry when an equilibrium of a solution is reached by diffusion in nature either in a vacuum or not. Unfortunately, new collectors needed to sustain the future business are being lost in the confusion and loss of trust to the hobby going forward. Just an assuming opinion it is. The past six months of 2024 has been dismal to say the least.阅读全文
